High Court Seeks Answers on Char Dham Yatra Mismanagement, Horse Deaths.

The Nainital High Court has granted more time to the district panchayats of Chamoli and Uttarkashi, along with other authorities, to submit their responses regarding public interest litigations (PILs) addressing the mismanagement and frequent horse deaths during the Char Dham pilgrimage. The case was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal.

The PILs, filed by social activists Gauri Maulekhi and Ajay Gautam, highlight that around 600 horses have died so far during the Char Dham pilgrimage. This alarming number of deaths raises concerns about potential disease outbreaks in the region.

The petitioners stress the importance of providing medical facilities for both animals and humans to ensure their safety. They point out that the ever-growing crowds during the pilgrimage are causing significant challenges related to food and accommodation for both animals and humans. The petitioners request the court to enforce a carrying capacity limit, allowing only a manageable number of pilgrims, horses, and mules. This measure aims to ensure that adequate facilities for food, drink, and shelter are available, and to prevent any cruelty towards animals.
