If you drive your own vehicle all the way to Rishikesh and hire a local driver once there, you should have no trouble getting there. It is preferable to hire a local driver from Rishikesh since they are familiar with the local roads. Moreover, when you are driving yourself, you are focusing on the road and not on the exquisite sights.
The majority of roads are excellent. However, when it rains, mud patches may appear, otherwise the road is passable. Alternatively, if you are a regular city driver, you can bring a companion along as driving such a big distance by yourself can be quite exhausting.
It will not be an issue if you drive carefully. Although most people believe they are competent drivers, driving on hills requires expertise and experience.
