Traffic Management for Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand
During the Char Dham Yatra, the Uttarakhand police will use eight drones and roughly 850 CCTV cameras to manage traffic and ensure safety on the pilgrimage routes. The cameras will help monitor traffic flow and keep an eye on the roads. More than half of these cameras will link directly to police control rooms.
Parking Facilities Across the Region
To address parking needs, approximately 130 parking spots have been designated in seven districts within the Garhwal region. These areas can hold over 55,000 vehicles, including around 17,000 cars and 38,000 motorcycles.
Specifically, parking capacities in different districts include:
Pauri: 7 parking spots for about 1,200 vehicles
Uttarkashi: 13 spots for roughly 2,200 vehicles
Dehradun: 16 spots for about 1,600 vehicles
Rudraprayag: 15 spots for approximately 2,400 vehicles
Chamoli: 34 spots for around 3,200 vehicles
Tehri: 20 spots for 13,300 vehicles
Haridwar: 25 spots for about 42,000 vehicles
A notable parking area in Sonprayag near Kedarnath has the capacity to accommodate about 3,000 vehicles, easing parking challenges for pilgrims visiting Kedarnath.
Addressing Traffic Bottlenecks
The police have identified about 70 traffic bottlenecks along the Char Dham routes where congestion often occurs. These include:
16 bottlenecks in Rudraprayag
8 in both Rishikesh and Chamoli
Over 15 in Srinagar and Lakshmanjhula
6 in both Uttarkashi and Tehri
About 10 in Haridwar
These areas, especially around Rishikesh, Srinagar, and near Kedarnath, typically face the most severe traffic jams. Extra police officers will be assigned to these critical spots to help keep traffic moving smoothly.
Road Safety and Management
To further ensure road safety and effective traffic management, the routes of the Char Dham Yatra have been divided into sectors, with a specific official responsible for each sector. This year, over 830 police personnel will be dedicated to managing traffic along these routes.
Overall, these measures by the Uttarakhand police are designed to enhance the safety and efficiency of the Char Dham Yatra for all pilgrims and visitors.
