Do you know about the interesting story of why Lord Shiva left Badrinath and why Lord Vishnu lives there today? Well, in this blog we are going to tell you all about it.
According to a legend, Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati had been residing in the beautiful Himalayan landscape of Badrinath. It was a peaceful and beautiful place for them. They went for a walk one day. On their return, they stumbled upon finding a baby all covered in sweat at their doorstep.
Parvati’s heart melted immediately. “Oh Shiva, this poor baby! Let us assist him,” she said.
But Lord Shiva who was quick to decipher the situation stretched out his hand.
“Stop, Parvati. This does not make sense,” “There are no footprints in the snow. Where did this baby come from?”
Parvati opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings only to understand that Shiva was correct. Nobody has abandoned the baby. There are no footprints in the snow and no humans around which would indicate that the baby had been abandoned.
But she could not control her maternal instincts.
“It would be such a shame to abandon him here; he is so weak and all by himself.”
But Lord Shiva disagreed.
“I understand that you have the best intentions, however, I feel that this child is behind something sinister and has no good intentions.
Nevertheless, Shiva told Parvati to deal with it herself and Parvati could not stand hearing the baby cry any longer. She carried him and took him into the house.
The baby ceased crying at once and smiled, naturally sitting on her lap comfortably, teasing Lord Shiva occasionally.
Shiva reluctantly accepted and said,
“Then we keep him but we must be ready for anything that comes with it.”
Nonetheless, the day went on, and the baby appeared fine. Sometime after, Lord Shiva and Parvati moved to the adjacent hot springs to take a bath while the baby was left at home.
When they returned, they realized that the doors were locked from within.
Stunned for a while, Parvati enquired,
“Who could have done this? The baby was inside all the time!”
Shiva looked at her knowingly.
“I told you, Parvati That baby is no normal child. Now he has shut us out”.
Parvati’s eyes were filled with worries.
“What do we do now? How do we get back in?”
Lord Shiva had two choices:
Violate his powers to evict them from their home or else look for an alternative house to live in.
He decided to choose the second option, as he did not wish to offend the child that Parvati loved.
“Moving out will be the only answer.
Because of your kindness we have no choice but to go.”
And thus they abandoned Badrinath and kept on moving until they constructed a dwelling at Kedarnath. Their going symbolized the transition to a new phase in their life, but the importance of Badrinath did not end here.
Years later, Adi Shankaracharya, a great philosopher and saint installed a temple to Badrinath and made it a final pilgrimage place.
The distance from Kaladi, Kerala, to Badrinath was more than three thousand kilometers, but the attempts of Adi Shankaracharya helped in the restoration of the Hindu religion. The descendants of the priests he appointed still serve in the temple today.
Today Badrinath is a destination for pilgrims and travelers, a place where the healing touch of the divine Lord Vishnu nourishes the soul.
It is one of the most prominent Char Dhams where devotees come from all over the world. This story reminds us of the power of compassion and the journey toward spiritual enlightenment.
And that’s how Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati left Badrinath, making way for Lord Vishnu to reside there.
