Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Gangotri at a height of 3,100 metres, Gangotri temple shrine is an essential part of the Chota char Dham Yatra.
Constructed during the 18th century by General Amar Singh, Gangotri temple is one of the most visited sites in Uttarakhand.
The strategic location of the temple, which is on the origin point of River Ganga, makes this shrine an important part of the pilgrimage for devout Hindus. The source of this river can be traced back to the Gangotri glacier which is named Gaumukh and is a 19km trek from Gangotri. People make their pilgrimage to Gangotri only after paying a visit to Yamunotri first. The temple gates open during the auspicious time of Akshaya Tritiya in April and closes during Vijayadashami (diwali) which occurs in the month of November. A visit here is supposed to spiritually enrich your soul.
As per mythology, Goddess Ganga had achieved the form of a river here to absolve King Bhagirath’s severe centuries old penance who wanted to absolve their predecessor’s sins.
